Why this Blog?

A place where I can lament the changing times; for eccentric comments on current affairs and for unfashionable views, expressed I hope, in cogent style; also occasional cris de coeur largely concerned, I regret to say, with myself.

Pussy Riot & Tsar Valdimir

Tsar takes the salute

Today I received an invitation from AVAAZ to sign a petition in support of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot whose members have been quite outrageously sentenced to two years' imprisonment for a protest made in a church.

Apparently there have been proposals in the European Parliament (that oh so unimpressive body) that sanctions be applied to the Russian elite; not a bad idea they appear to be a pretty dubious lot one way and the other - BP, never averse to making money gave up the Russian scheme as a bad job and I suppose that there may well have been many others who have experienced that peculiar poker-faced obstructionism that seems to flourish there.

Anyway Tsar Valdimir has continued to support the appalling Bashar Assad offering weasel words about "a political settlement" which puts him beyond the pale as far as this writer is concerned.

Here's a link if you feel inclined to offer your support to Pussy Riot.

Enemies of the State: Pussy Riot

Until the next time

Yes I suppose it could have been one of those "sense-of-humour-failure moments"

Still, two years' bird in a Russian slammer...

What would happen if someone printed pictures of the Tsar in the buff I wonder?

"in the buff" ....you`ve been reading the tabloids again. Perhaps Harry is joining the Doukhobors.

before pussy riot....
On 15 November 2010 Voina’s Leonid Nikolayev, aka Crazy Lenya, and Oleg Vorotnikov were arrested for overturning a police cars as part of a performance artwork entitled ‘Palace Coup’. Vorotnikov and the two-year-old son of another Voina member called Sokol, rolled a ball under the patrol car and four activists then turned the car over to get it back. The official charges were hooliganism motivated by hatred or hostility towards a social group… even though the police in Russia – or anywhere else in the world for that matter – can hardly be described as fucking ‘social’, let alone a ‘social group’. ;-)

Whilst they were being held on remand the famous Bristol street-artist, Banksy (who is not a fucking patch on Sheffield’s Phlegm by the way) sent £80,000 in bail money to have them released. Viona promptly gave the money away to help other political prisoners.

"This blog is intended to offer odds and ends of information that I hope will be interesting and amusing. Perhaps less amusing will be my occasional rants and metaphorical sighs about and at the world we live in, its governance and population."
