Why this Blog?

A place where I can lament the changing times; for eccentric comments on current affairs and for unfashionable views, expressed I hope, in cogent style; also occasional cris de coeur largely concerned, I regret to say, with myself.

Syria

On reflection, I consider that a military strike - even a so-called surgical strike (if at all possible) - against Bashar al-Assad's horrible regime would not be a good idea.  I believe that the Syrian government, or at least elements of the Syrian military are responsible for the awful chemical attacks carried out last week since I am convinced that rebels do not have the means for such attacks.

Nevertheless, there are it seems, terrible people on both sides, and given the likelihood of collateral damage and deaths possibly of innocents, I can see that all an attack would do would be further to entrench opinions there, and were such attacks to result in the substantial weakening or even removal of al-Assad, in no time at all there would be another bunch of medieval extremists in charge with their stupid Sharia Laws, who would continue to wage war - as they have done for 1300 years - on their ideological opponents - Sunni or Shia, take your pick.

As for Mr Miliband's performance in the House of Commons yesterday, I see him as a nasty little opportunist turncoat and appeaser.

And the people of Syria will continue to suffer, victims of an ideology that is a 1000 years out of date.

Another Mass-Murderer...

... protests his innocence.  Of course we all know that it is most likely that the opposition movement in Syria has been infiltrated by the towel-headed, Koran-bashing, Allah-bothering fanatics, but that rather misses the point doesn't it?

The fact remains is that Bashar's military has been murdering Syrian civilians - including air-strikes and possibly chemical weaponry (à la Saddam - remember?).

Perhaps Bashar can tell us why he is doing that before blaming other countries.  Perhaps he might blame Saudi-Arabia from whence it is said Al-Qaeda's money comes?

Serious Matters in the Middle-East

The news that Turkey, exasperated by the Syrian army firing into its territory has, for the first time responded in kind, will quite obviously have set alarm bells ringing around all the NATO countries.

Turkey has a large, powerful army; Bashar al-Assad would I think, be very unwise to permit further provocations.

And since the famously secular Turkish Army (carrying on the traditions of Ataturk) would perhaps not entirely find an opportunity to demonstrate its might to its current Islamic masters  unwelcome, al-Assad should be doubly cautious.

The fact that I think that al-Assad should disappear up his own bottom is another matter of course.

Pussy Riot & Tsar Valdimir

Tsar takes the salute

Today I received an invitation from AVAAZ to sign a petition in support of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot whose members have been quite outrageously sentenced to two years' imprisonment for a protest made in a church.

Apparently there have been proposals in the European Parliament (that oh so unimpressive body) that sanctions be applied to the Russian elite; not a bad idea they appear to be a pretty dubious lot one way and the other - BP, never averse to making money gave up the Russian scheme as a bad job and I suppose that there may well have been many others who have experienced that peculiar poker-faced obstructionism that seems to flourish there.

Anyway Tsar Valdimir has continued to support the appalling Bashar Assad offering weasel words about "a political settlement" which puts him beyond the pale as far as this writer is concerned.

Here's a link if you feel inclined to offer your support to Pussy Riot.

Syria

[19/18]

Since his nepotic assumption of the reins of power, I have never liked the cut of Bashar al-Assad's jib.

As subsequent events have shown, he is a cunt.

Someone once shouted at General de Gaulle: "Mort aux cons!"  The wise general responded: "Gros travail."

Plus ca change: President Putin re-elected with, no doubt 99.9% of the vote,* is also a cunt for continuing to support Bashar.

Mort aux cons!

Until the next time

* The miscreants (0.1%) will of course, be brought to book for their "mistakes" and receive a suitable term of "re-education" at the Josef Stalin Memorial Academy at Novosibirsk.
