Why this Blog?

A place where I can lament the changing times; for eccentric comments on current affairs and for unfashionable views, expressed I hope, in cogent style; also occasional cris de coeur largely concerned, I regret to say, with myself.

The Ashes 2013

I'm very disappointed to see the final Ashes match called off for bad light with just four overs remaining, with England having every chance to win - albeit with an effort.  Surely the ICC must now review the absurd light laws which it has instituted.

But I offer my compliments to Australian captain Michael Clarke for his very sporting declaration at tea today, which in my view was in the best spirit of the Game.

Until the next time.

Farcical

The case of Sergeant Nightingale of the SAS tells us quite a lot about what is wrong in modern Britain.

In a military gaol, for possessing a trophy - a Glock pistol and some ammunition - which was apparently to be "disabled" and mounted" we have the ludicrous situation where a decent man is in what my mother likes to refer to as "the slammer."

Meanwhile some bearded English Muslim twat - sorry I meant "traitor," who reportedly believes in "sharia law" is up before the beak.

Who would YOU trust?

Barking mad.

Horse-Shit?

There's a big fuss at present about horse-meat.

Rightly so if it has been sold as beef, mutton, pork &c. by bent meat processors and suppliers, and there is a slim chance that some of the horses that provided the meat may have been treated with a drug that is apt to disagree with humans.

Actually, I suspect that the English are more upset about the fact that it is horse - I have no reason for thinking this but I suspect that it is the case, and it is an ideal subject for the tabloid press to "get their teeth into"!

Nothing wrong with horse-meat; in France I ate it raw (Cheval Tartare) and very good it was too.

Smoking Encore

Lots of smoking news recently; I hope that I haven't upset any virulent anti-smoking types amongst my readers!

Inspired by Frank Davis (link on right-hand side of this page) I have re-activated myself in regard to my inherent objection to "nanny-states" and "big government."

In today's post he pointed me toward an excellent blog called "Banned"

I have of course added this as a link here since once again, I fully approve of this individual's position, as my regular readers will probably appreciate.

With regard to SMOKING, "Banned" has reported an excellent item concerning an article in the "New Statesman" (a left-wing politically weekly) suggesting that government minister "Vince" Cable presses on with the Labour Party's anti-smoking policy. I have taken the liberty of copying and pasting the piece as I consider it to be essential reading:

Smoking Hot
23 October 2010 at 00:22
Read this Mr Cable. l had the honour of taking D-Day veterans back to Normandy this July courtesy of Heroes Return. What follows is a conversation that l was party too. lt is verbatim and the only alterations l shall make is censoring the swearing. Don't judge them by the swearing either, they were in each others company and no ladies or children were present. lf they had been present they would've behaved like the gentlemen they are.

"Later on when l'd taken them to bar and we were sat out in the sun having a beer ... and a smoke, one of the vets said " Y'know, l used to enjoy a pint and a smoke at the pub but it's not worth going anymore. Hardly anyone goes. When l have been and l want a smoke l've got to shuffle out on these f'ing sticks. Doesn't matter if it's pouring with rain, blowing a gale, f'ing snowing ... out l f'ing go"
He went on "What really pi**es me off is all them f'ing anti-smoking c**ts. They say it's better for me, it's healthier, it's for my own good ... l'm 85 for ffs!"

His mate replied " Makes you wonder why we bothered, f'ing fascists won in the end"

BANNED, for reasons that are not entirely clear to me included the following video in the post, which shows a very romantic view of England, sadly all of it concerned with the past:

I am happy to take the stand and swear that that England has it appears, gone forever; big government is to blame. The country in which I grew up no longer exists, which is partly why I no longer live there.

Until the next time.

Offensive Weapon Warning

"Evil" hot pepperoni pizza

Yes, it's a hot pepperoni pizza.

The Daily Telegraph reports that a pizza delivery man in Florida fought off a gun-slinging crook by throwing a steaming hot pizza into his face.  Three alleged miscreants have been arrested.

I expect that since the law in England is firmly on the side of the criminal, that had the events taken place in "Blighty" then it would be the delivery man who would now be in gaol, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, and were the "criminals" members of an "ethnic minority", with a "hate" crime also.  The miscreants, who would all of course claim to have been "abused" would be receiving "counselling" and probably a holiday at public expense.

I expect that just as law-abiding people are being arrested for carrying penknives, that soon carrying a hot pizza will also be an offence - in England.

Political Wit

This morning, I read a Daily Telegraph report about the Oxford University Press's new edition of its Childrens' Dictionary.  The new edition is distinguished in particular, by the many words removed, words such as "empire", bishop", "marzipan", "sycamore", "fern", "raven", "chestnut","sin", "oyster."  New entries include "celebrity", "MP3 player" "bungee jumping", "voicemail", "vandalism."

As might well be imagined,  the comments after the article display extreme rage and anger (to borrow a line from Private Eye, this is after all Sir Herbert Gussett's territory).  I am in total agreement: as far as I am concerned, the Philistines are not at the gate, they are well-established inside.  Fortunately I am not inside with them.

One who commented, in a way that suggested that his anger had rather run away with him pointed out that the UK Libertarian party had recently sent a copy of George Orwell's 1984 to each of the 659 Westminster MPs with the notation that the book was meant to be a "warning not a blueprint."  I like this kind of humour.

Reminds me of the car sticker that read "Come back Guy Fawkes, your country needs you."

The manifesto of the UK Libertarian Party, makes for interesting reading.  After a quick read, it seems to me that the party's principal objective is less government, an objective with which I wholeheartedly agree.

Until the next time.
