I don`t think its true.Propaganda rules. Many of those caught up in the conflict felt sorry for the civilians. Bombing was also considered heroic and the heroism was drip fed to a population sensorily deprived of even basic truths of the conduct of war.A population that sent its children to die because they were told it was heroic, war to end all wars, just war, god on our side!!

sorry to rant...i`m off for a cold shower `00`Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093094753419569743.post-46990584176678135822013-02-24T13:54:43.055+00:002013-02-24T13:54:43.055+00:00Tragically it's quite possible that the politi...Tragically it's quite possible that the politicians of the time did respect public opinion.

I remember that about 1970 we knew a German girl who was refused service in a local shop because she was German.

Imagine what the attitudes were when the blitz was a recent memory. As usual the politicians should have known better than to react in knee-jerk fashion to the attitudes of the lumpen proletariat. As I wrote in the original article, my parents felt sorry for the German population - and this after my father had been hospitlaised having been struck by a bomb, and my mother and grandmother buried in their house as a result of a parachute mine.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02371850435667108476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093094753419569743.post-85665509951413828852013-02-24T10:36:52.668+00:002013-02-24T10:36:52.668+00:00Epstein had a fair stab at portraying Portal, the ...Epstein had a fair stab at portraying Portal, the man who invented Allied Carpet bombing. `0
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093094753419569743.post-60005083464390267152013-02-23T15:27:30.821+00:002013-02-23T15:27:30.821+00:00I missed the bit where politicians had respect for...I missed the bit where politicians had respect for public opinion...O`Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093094753419569743.post-32374199561232534992013-02-23T14:14:27.850+00:002013-02-23T14:14:27.850+00:00Well that rather misses the point. The Allies were perfectly correct in conducting bombing campaigns during the war against Nazi Germany, but against military and industrial targets only. Early in the war bombing accuracy was pathetic so there was inevitably what is known these days as collateral damage.

However, by 1943/4 bombing accuracy was so greatly improved that there was absolutely no justification in carrying out terrorist attacks on the civilian population. I wrote in the original article that the US bomber crews were unhappy about carrying out such orders - at least in regard to Dresden - so one cannot even justify such policies using the term "zeitgeist", though of course maybe the politicians were behind the times in respect of popular opinion; not the first and I am sure, not for the last time.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02371850435667108476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093094753419569743.post-35224927518703860062013-02-23T11:09:05.098+00:002013-02-23T11:09:05.098+00:00politicians just love bombing stuff `opoliticians just love bombing stuff `oAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
